The first thing you need is a guitar on which you can practice. You can buy new or borrow it from a friend. you can choose either an acoustic or an electric one depending on what your preference is. If you're buying its best to get something that is affordable but sounds nice, without going overboard with the purchase. You can spend the extra money on your guitar lessons. You should also try to learn about the various parts of the guitar and how to change/tune the guitar strings.
You can try to learn the guitar yourself, considering the amount of resources that are available online, a guitar teacher can provide valuable guidance because of their years of training and experience on the guitar. Also, they will be able to correct any improper hand movement and/or posture.
Correct posture is important for guitar players so its also important to sit properly, preferably in an armless chair, with the guitar resting on your lap. You may even use a foot rest so that you can prop the guitar on one knee for added support and ease of use.
Its a good idea to learn how to read notes and learn to play the scales. If you're interested in playing classical music, you'll be required to read notes. The most important tip for beginner guitar players is to practice regularly. There's no substitute for putting in the hours, if you want to be able to play well.
So practice more, be comfortable, and above all, learn to have fun with your guitar.
